5x new hotspots in September (2025)

The Hague never slows down when it comes to food and drinks. Every month there’s something new popping up, from Basque tapas on the beach to hand rolls by the harbour and fresh scoops of artisan ice cream in the Frederikstraat.

1. Hito

New at Noorderstrand: Hito. This year-round beach spot is all about Basque flavours. Chef Rogier Trip, known from Caron in Amsterdam, serves up small plates like grilled artichoke and seared prawns, alongside his unmissable burger with Morbier cheese. Inside it’s bright, spacious and stylish with retro furniture and a floating ceiling, while outside the southwest terrace looks out over surfers and the lighthouse. Hito is here to stay, so you can drop by any time of year.

2. Brasserie Runners

In Benoordenhout, neighbourhood café Runners has been given a new life as Brasserie Runners. Owners Mariëlle Tonnon (also of Café Soof) and Puk van Maanen have completely refreshed the place while keeping its local feel. The interior is light and Scandinavian, with warm tones of wood and leather. In the kitchen you’ll find Niels Rosier, former chef at Cru and De Basiliek, serving a compact menu made for sharing. Think charred broccoli with gnocchi or bavette with café au lait sauce. A spot you can drop into all day long – a true brasserie.

3. La Petite Encore

The Simonis family has expanded its culinary footprint in Scheveningen harbour. After Catch and Encore, September saw the arrival of La Petite Encore, a new spot in the former Beso location. Under one roof you’ll find classic French dishes like sole meunière and millefeuille cherries, alongside a dedicated hand roll bar serving sushi rolls you can eat straight from the hand. Think salmon torch with salmon and red miso or California crab with crab, masago and Japanese mayo. La Petite Encore is open from Wednesday through Sunday.

4. Dolce Freddo

What was missing in Frederikstraat? A really good ice cream shop. Enter Dolce Freddo, which opened at number 675 this summer. Kari and her team serve up scoops of artisanal ice cream alongside proper cappuccinos. Flavours go from amarena to salted caramel. And who says September isn’t ice cream season? Even in early autumn, the terrace is a perfect place to sit back with a cone and soak up the sun.

5. Café Parley

Sports fan? Head to the Prins Hendrikstraat, where the new Café Parley has just opened, a place where beer, sports and games come together. Eight beers on tap, big screens for football and Formula 1, plus a pool table and darts. The food is simple: burgers, hotdogs and steaks to share. It’s not about fine dining here, but about watching, playing and catching up, perfectly summed up by the name Parley (French for “to talk”).
