Basaal is the perfect place for me to enjoy dinner with friends. The menu is always full of surprises, and the wine selection never disappoints. As for their legendary Pommes Darphin, I’d love to see it back on the menu soon. It’s the kind of dish that always has you ordering an extra portion.

Store du Nord

An exceptionally well-curated shop with a strong selection of high-quality independent brands. Owner Jeroen has a clear vision, is always helpful, and couldn’t be friendlier. An added bonus: he stocks Rototo socks. Once you’ve worn a pair, it’s hard to go back to anything else.

3. Favourite takeaway lunch

Italo Disco

A relatively new addition to Zeestraat, serving sandwiches on dough that sits somewhere between pizza and focaccia. Absolutely delicious. I can’t think of a better sandwich takeaway. Perfect for lunch, but just as good packed up for a picnic or a day at the beach.

4. Favourite wine shop

Marius Wine

I prefer to buy my wine from Marius Wine. They have an excellent selection, with something for just about every occasion. Alongside more special bottles, I always keep a few cases of Stefan Winter’s Grauburgunder at home. It’s the kind of wine you can happily open any day of the week.
