1. Favourite restaurant

Flora Café Restaurant

Café Restaurant Flora

I am a fan of Restaurant Flora and the cinema there too, for that matter. It is located on the sixth floor of an otherwise empty building and has a view over the whole of The Hague. The beetroot with goat's yoghurt is worth mentioning. The service is super attentive and patiently explains what's in each dish. If you listen carefully, you'll realise that you'll never be able to recreate these dishes at home.

2. Favourite ice cream parlour

Piet Artisans of Flavour

Piet Ice

I'm not a big ice cream eater, but I'm happy to make an exception for Piet in Piet Heinstraat. They sell ice cream with unusual flavours there. From India comes ice cream with kulfi, saffron and cardamom. Very unusual and very tasty. But a grapefruit-campari ice cream is also not to be sneezed at.

3. Favourite cake shop

Philippe Galerne

Recommended: Philippe Galerne

Every weekend, there is a long queue outside Philippe Galerne's patisserie on Aert van der Goesstraat.
for croissants, baguettes and, of course, tartlets. The chocolate tartlet with chocolate pearls in particular is like a delicious giant bonbon that I highly recommend. Delicious!

4. Favourite cocktail bar

Little V & ‘Queru’ Mexican Cantina

I don't drink cocktails, but – for those who do – I would recommend Little V and ‘Queru’ Cantina Mexicana. Both restaurants serve popular cocktails and have a nice, affordable menu. And for me, they have delicious homemade lemonades.

5. Guilty pleasure

Haagse Markt

Recommended: The Hague Market

A tasty treat from the Haagse Markt, fresh from the fryer. De Haagse Markt is definitely worth a visit. It is the largest market in the Netherlands and, if you avoid the busiest times, it is a pleasant place to be. The slogan used to be: ‘At the market, your guilder is worth a daalder (1.50).’ Now, 1 euro is worth 3 euros. It's always difficult not to come home with too much food.
