The charm of De Fred: our favourite hotspots

Frederik Hendriklaan — affectionately known as ‘De Fred’ by locals — is one of The Hague's most characterful shopping streets. This month, Media Fresca publishing house is working there from Hybrid Offices, a stylish location with luxuriously furnished spaces that offer countless possibilities for any business meeting in the heart of the Statenkwartier. It's the perfect base from which to rediscover the avenue. From our regular favourites to surprising new discoveries: we take you to the places on De Fred that you definitely don't want to miss.

Food & drink

There are plenty of places to eat or drink along this avenue, which is almost a kilometre long. We'll start at a new place we recently visited for lunch: Marly's Restaurant, a French-inspired restaurant serving dishes such as coquilles Saint-Jacques beurre noisette, a brioche saumon fumé and tarte tartin. Prefer something quick? A few doors down, you can grab a sandwich at Boosty. De Fred has also been on De Fred since 2025. Hop & Stork, a lovely spot for a slice of cake and a cup of coffee. At the beginning – or rather at the end – of the avenue beckons Restobar Moos, perfect for an after-work cocktail. For tapas, we'll join you at Vinostra, just past De Fred in Aert van der Goesstraat.

Shops & boutiques

The Fred, with all its side streets, has more than a hundred shops – from fashion and homewares to food and sleep – everything is intertwined, which makes it fun. We love to browse at Poush, a shop-in-shop where entrepreneurs, designers and start-ups showcase their labels. Paagman is there too, of course, the largest bookshop in the city where you'll find yourself lingering longer than you intended. Among the stacks of books, you'll spot our own magazine Kingstreet. We prefer to get our wine from Bosman Wine sellers, which has a very extensive range of biodynamic wines. And then there is also Pure Flowers, a fairy-tale flower kiosk.

Beauty & self-care spots

In addition to all the shops and eateries, De Fred also has a few lovely places where you can pamper yourself. Babassu is brand new, the boutique that used to be in the centre, but the concept is the same: perfumes, skincare and make-up. They also offer treatments, such as deep cleansing or aromatherapy. Need a haircut? You'll find it right between the bakeries and boutiques. Rob Peetoom, a name that is known even outside the Netherlands. If you walk from De Fred towards Aert van der Goesstraat, you will arrive at ASPA. A tranquil place where Azra Secerbegovic works as if she has brought skin science to the high street. Here, there are no quick fixes, but knowledge, attention and treatments that are truly tailored to your skin.

ASPA

Azra Secerbegovic from ASPA conducts a comprehensive skin analysis using a specialised camera and provides personalised advice on the best skincare routine.

These are just a few of our favourite gems, and we are curious to see what we will discover during our time at Hybrid Offices further discoveries on Fred.
