1. Favourite restaurant
Ñ

This is the restaurant I recommend to people if they only have one night in The Hague. Everything on the menu is good, and the staff have excellent wine knowledge. The characteristic corner building, in itself, is already worth a visit. Ñ probably has the best terrace in the city – it’s easy to love life while sitting there.

2. Favourite outdoor spot
Clingendael

Spend time in nature – I guess it’s necessary if you want to stay sane when living in a city. Clingendael offers the perfect escape: it is one of the most beautiful country estates in the Netherlands. It’s showpiece: The Japanese Garden, filled with beautiful, rare trees and plants. Make sure you time your visit well, as The Japanese Garden is only open in spring (May/June) and autumn (October).

3. Favourite theatre
Amare

This cultural centre calls itself ‘the living room of the city’. If you walk in spontaneously, you’ll find out what they mean. Alongside its programmed concerts, theatre and classical music, you will always find something interesting (and free) going on: a photo exhibition, people dancing, a small concert or a stranger keen to exchange thoughts. The cool part: if you have an idea, Amare encourages you to organise your own event. See you there?

4. Favourite place to go out
Flora

In life, there are some combinations you are better off avoiding – like strawberries and liquorice. Luckily, you also find perfect pairings, such as Flora: a rooftop restaurant and cinema. From the old building, which used to be a telephone exchange, you get one of the best views over the city. Recommended: their orange wine, best enjoyed on the balcony (especially in summer) – but not too much, unless you want to risk falling asleep during the film.

5. Guilty pleasure
De Dagvisser

Maybe it’s unfair to other Dutch cities, but it’s undeniable: the beach makes The Hague number one. I like to round off a visit to Scheveningen (just as nice in autumn and winter) with some fish. At restaurant De Dagvisser, everything is fresh, and the staff know how to create a perfect evening. Always nice: the oysters, white wine and sole.
