In the heart of the city stands the Mauritshuis. Though internationally known for world-class art, it is more than just a museum for a group of internationals. Over the past decade, it has become a cultural home away from home for the International Friends of the Mauritshuis. \u201cWe are patrons of the arts and a members\u2019 club,\u201d says Carolyn Wiersum, chair of the International Friends of the Mauritshuis's organising committee. \u201cBut more than that, the Friends love being involved with the Mauritshuis and actively see themselves as part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The International Friends was initiated by the Dutch \u201cVrienden\u201d (Friends), who had long been supporters of the museum. They recognised a need for something accessible to The Hague\u2019s international community. What started as a handful of volunteers has grown into a loyal group of 250 members from 25 countries, hosting 10 events a year and supporting the Mauritshuis through fundraising activities.<\/p>\n

Bridge<\/h2>\n

The museum\u2019s intimate size and rich collection of 17th-century art make it easy to feel at home. From curator talks to workshops and excursions, the English-speaking programme offers opportunities to take a closer look at Dutch art while getting to know other international residents in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. \u201cArt is the starting point,\u201d says Sabine Miesen of the organising committee. \u201cIt brings us together and has facilitated many friendships.\u201d<\/p>\n

The International Friends\u2019 events always connect a painting or exhibition from the Mauritshuis collection or local history to contemporary topics. For example, the perfume workshop, inspired by the floral theme of the exhibition \u201cIn Full Bloom\u201d, was held in collaboration with a leading Parisian label.<\/p>\n

One memorable highlight for Carolyn was recreating Constantijn Huygens's expedition and picnic with the exiled wife of the English king, Charles I, to taste the cherries. This involved a boat trip to Huygens Museum: Hofwijck, followed by a lunch complete with cherries.<\/p>\n

Last summer, the group enjoyed a tour of the back lanes behind Bierkade, discovering hidden garden entrances to the Spinozahuis and the homes of Paulus Potter, Jan van Goyen and Claes van Balkeneynde. Carolyn and Sabine describe it as stepping back in time, a contrast to the bars around the corner where enthusiastic locals were watching a World Cup match. \u201cIt\u2019s fun, and that is the point: we want people to enjoy exploring art in a different way,\u201d confirms Carolyn.<\/p>\n

Experiences<\/h2>\n

The organising committee meets weekly for hybrid meetings, with two members joining online from their new home countries abroad \u2013 surely a testament to their dedication and lasting friendships.<\/p>\n

The uniqueness and strength of the International Friends lie humbly in the impressive variety of experiences they offer. Events are designed and shaped around an evolving list of creative ideas gathered by committee members. Activities have included a Kintsugi workshop, a flower-drawing session with a botanical artist, and trips to museums across the Netherlands, including the Rembrandt House in Amsterdam and the H\u2019ART Museum.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe try not to repeat anything,\u201d says Carolyn. \u201cEvery year brings something new and inspiring.\u201d The Mauritshuis is an active partner in this. Twice a year, the volunteers meet with the management to coordinate plans and develop ideas. This cooperation leads to lively lectures with curators, special activities and behind-the-scenes tours, for example.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy Dutch wife and I always enjoy the friendly, relaxed atmosphere in an international setting, and have made many new friends,\u201d says Rick Roark, retired medical professor from New York City. \u201cAlthough my main reason for joining three years ago was to support the museum, it has exceeded my expectations. The activities they offer go beyond the Mauritshuis art collection \u2013 though I never tire of that \u2013 to include history, music, and learning firsthand about the endeavours of the museum\u2019s directors and staff. The activities are a welcome opportunity to just be myself among like-minded internationals who appreciate art.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beyond museums walls<\/h2>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not exclusive, but we believe the experiences we offer are truly unique,\u201d says Sabine. \u201cAnd we love welcoming new people who are curious and open-minded.\u201d To support this outlook and offer events tailored more towards students and young professionals, the Friends are enhancing their social media and online presence. They also changed the timing of the activities to early evenings, starting at 6 pm, with time to chat over drinks and bites, followed by a lecture, making it easier for professionals to attend.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to share the joy of art and the wonder of discovering new places with the next generation,\u201d says Carolyn. Although the group began as a way to offer \u201csomething in English\u201d, it has evolved into a more lasting presence. The International Friends have created a space for meaningful connection, shaped by art and open to all.<\/p>\n
